چکیده

This paper proposes an LMT analysis for valence alternations in German of the form NP V NP [P NP ] NP V NP [P NP ], where the indices denote referential identity. These alternations involve direct internal arguments (i.e., objects) and indirect prepositional complements, and characterize among others the behaviour of verbal predicates which participate in the so-called Locative Alternation phenomena in German.

Valence Alternations in Modern Greek: an MRS analysis

In other words, the valence alternations in Modern Greek we focus on in this paper are the ones involving direct internal arguments (i.e., objects) and indirect prepositional complements. Such alternation patterns in Modern Greek characterize mainly the behaviour of verbal predicates which participate in the so-called Locative Alternation phenomena. The rest of the paper is structured as follow...

The key role of semantics in the development of large-scale grammars of natural language

The aim of this paper is to show how large-scale (computational) grammars of natural language benefit from an organization of semantics which is based on Minimal Recursion Semantics (MRS; Copestake et al. (1999)). This we are doing by providing an account of valence alternations in German based on MRS, showing how such an account makes a computational grammar more efficient and less complicated...

There Are More Valence Alternations than the Ditransitive

Recent research has witnessed a growing interest in determining how much usage frequency explains language patterns and language processing (Bybee, 2006; Pierrehumbert, 2001; Jurafsky, 2002). This paper focuses on the degree to which the relative frequency of verbs in syntactic frames (or valence alternations) may explain the acquisition of these frames (or these alternations). Valence alternat...

Design of LMT: A Prolog-Based Machine Translation System

LMT (logic-based machine translation) is an experimental English-to-German MT system, being developed in the framework of logic programming. The English analysis uses a logic grammar formalism, Modular Logic Grammar, which allows logic grammars to be more compact, and which has a modular treatment of syntax, lexicon, and semantics. The English grammar is written independently of the task of tra...

Macroscopic and microscopic typology: Basic Valence Orientation, more pertinacious than meets the naked eye

Basic Valence Orientation has been suggested as a typological parameter by Nichols, Peterson, & Barnes (2004). Generalising over the entire lexicon, the idea is that languages can be distinguished as transitivising or detransitivising, depending on whether their verbs are basically intransitive or transitive and the opposite valency values require some means of derivation, such as causativisati...
